Dr. Glen Bradley, Ph.D.
Dr. Bradley serves as a consultant and advisor for ophthalmic and non-ophthalmic medical device companies. A veteran of the eye care industry, Dr. Bradley served as an executive officer of Novartis, AG of Basel, Switzerland from 1996 to 2003. In addition, he was the chief executive officer of CIBA Vision Group in Atlanta and Zurich from 1990 to 2003. Prior to this, he led CIBA Vision Corporation in Atlanta as president and chief executive officer from 1986-1989. Early in his career, Dr. Bradley worked for several different divisions of the CIBA-Geigy Corporation.
Dr. Bradley earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Mississippi State University, a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Louisiana State University, an M.B.A. in business and finance from the University of Connecticut and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Mark Brooks, M.B.A.
Managing Director, Scale Venture Partners
Mark Brooks invests in medical devices and healthcare services. During his 17- year career, he has been involved in numerous acquisitions and developed clinical and regulatory strategies for Scale portfolio companies. Mark sits on the boards of Alimera Sciences, Converge Medical, E-Surg, National Healing Company and USHW.
Prior to joining Scale Venture Partners in 1995, Mark led projects in the healthcare insurance, lab testing, and telecommunications service industries for Mercer Management Consulting, where he was a Senior Associate. Before Mercer, he provided LBO and acquisition capital to cable, entertainment and publishing companies for Manufacturers Hanover Trust.
Mark earned his M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his Bachelor of Art in Economics from Dartmouth.
Brian Halak, Ph.D., B.S.E.
Partner, Domain Associates
Brian Halak is a partner with Domain Associates. Previously, Halak worked for Advanced Technology Ventures, a venture capital firm, and for Wilkerson Group, a management consulting firm devoted exclusively to the medical industry. In this capacity, he developed strategy for leading firms in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries.
Halak received a doctorate in immunology from Thomas Jefferson University and a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He has published and presented on the topic of tumor immunology. Halak serves on the Investment Advisory Council for Ben Franklin Technology Partners and BioAdvance, both of which are Philadelphia seed-stage investment groups.
James R. Largent
James R. Largent has worked extensively within the medical industry. Mr. Largent most recently served as a medical and pharmaceutical consultant, including work with U.S. ophthalmic device company, Eyeonics Inc. While there, he led the lobbying effort that resulted in the 2005 landmark decision by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to allow for patient shared billing for premium presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses. Also in his role as a consultant, he assisted a multinational pharmaceutical and medical device company in the evaluation of strategic targets. Prior to this, Mr. Largent served in various senior management positions at Allergan, Inc., including as vice president of strategic planning where he fostered licensing deals to build product pipelines. Earlier in his career, he was vice president of strategic marketing at Allergan Medical Optics, Inc. Mr. Largent also held positions of increasing responsibility in the marketing and sales departments at Allergan and Pharmacia Ophthalmics.
In addition to serving on Alimera's Board, Mr. Largent is on the board of directors of Tear Science, Inc., a privately held developer of diagnostic and therapeutic devices for the treatment of patients with dry eye disease. Mr. Largent earned a B.A. in chemistry and an M.B.A., both from the University of California, Irvine.
Dan Myers
President and Chief Executive Officer, Alimera Sciences
Dan Myers is the co-founder of Alimera Sciences, Inc. and has served as its President and CEO since 2003. Under his leadership Alimera has raised Series A, Series B and Series C venture funding totaling approximately $106M and was the Georgia BIO “Deal of the Year” in 2004 and 2005 as well as the Southeastern BIO “Strategic Deal of the Year” in 2010. Dan led the company through a successful IPO in April of 2010 raising $72M in additional capital. Alimera is an emerging ophthalmic pharmaceutical company focused on both anterior and posterior diseases of the eye, with particular emphasis in drug delivery systems for retina disease. Alimera’s lead product, Iluvien, is an ocular implant for the treatment of Diabetic Macular Edema. Alimera filed an NDA on June 30, 2010 is awaiting FDA approval.
Prior to Alimera, Dan was a founding member of Novartis Ophthalmics (formerly CIBA Vision Ophthalmics) and served as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing and later as President from 1997 through 2002. Dan has 28 years of sales, marketing and general management experience in the ophthalmic pharmaceutical industry through tenures at Novartis, Allergan, and Johnson & Johnson. Dan has been a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Corporate Advisory Council, active in the Foundation Fighting Blindness and former Board Member of Prevent Blindness America. In addition, he has served on the Carter Foundation Board of Councilors in Atlanta and currently sits on the Board of the Georgia BIO, Southeastern BIO, and National BIO organizations. Dan has a degree in Industrial Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Peter J. Pizzo
Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Carticept Medical, Inc.
Peter J. Pizzo, III has been a member of our board of directors since April 2010. Since its formation in 2005, Mr. Pizzo has served as the Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Carticept Medical, Inc., a private orthopedic medical device company, which he co-founded. From 2002 until its sale in 2005, Mr. Pizzo served as the Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Proxima Therapeutics, Inc., a private medical device company that developed and marketed local radiation delivery systems for the treatment of solid cancerous tumors. From 1996 to 2001, Mr. Pizzo worked for Serologicals Corporation, a publicly traded global provider of biological products to life science companies, ultimately serving as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. From 1995 to 1996, Mr. Pizzo served as Vice President of Administration and Controller of ValueMark Healthcare Systems, Inc., a privately held owner-operator of psychiatric hospitals. From 1992 until its sale in 1995, Mr. Pizzo served in various senior financial positions at Hallmark Healthcare Corporation, a publicly traded hospital management company, most recently as Treasurer. Mr. Pizzo holds a Bachelor of Science with Special Attainments in Commerce from Washington and Lee University. We believe Mr. Pizzo's qualifications to serve as a director of our company include 18 years of experience in medical devices, biologics and healthcare services, including the past ten years in the role of vice president, finance and chief financial officer.
Calvin W. Roberts, M.D
Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Cornell University
Dr. Calvin W. Roberts is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Roberts holds patents on the wide-field specular microscope, used for corneal endothelial studies, and is the developer of instruments for cataract surgery. As a consultant to ophthalmic pharmaceutical companies, including Allergan Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson and Novartis, Roberts has helped lead the development and marketing efforts for several new therapeutics. He specializes in cataract and refractive surgery in his New York City private practice.
A graduate of Princeton University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, Roberts completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Roberts also completed cornea fellowships at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston.
Phil Tracy, J.D.
Venture Partner, Intersouth Partners
Phil Tracy has been a venture partner with Intersouth Partners since 1997. He was formerly president and CEO of Burroughs Wellcome Co., a major pharmaceutical company with $1.2 billion in sales and 5,000 employees before its merger with GlaxoSmithKline.
Tracy served on the board of directors for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association of America and the Nonprescription Drug Manufacturers Association. He also served as chairman of the board of visitors for Duke University Medical Center and as a member of the visitors' board for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
